Doctoral students are often faced with multiple unfamiliar challenges, including approaching the academic job market and navigating mental health during the PhD journey. The GDO Doctoral Student Workshop will provide an opportunity for students to build connections and hear from early career faculty who have recently navigated challenges of the PhD.

The GDO Doctoral Student Workshop this year will involve two panel discussions and an ethics workshop and also include lots of opportunity for Q&A and interactive discussion. Panelists will offer insights on the following topics:

    • Panel #1: Navigating the academic job market
    • Panel # 2: Navigating challenges (e.g., mental health) of the doctoral journey

Following panelist discussions, will be an ethics discussion:

    •  Ethics discussion: "The Ethicist Is In:" An opportunity to ask questions with representative of the Ethics Education Committee

The GDO Doctoral Student Workshop will include presentations and interactive discussion sessions with faculty members. It has been designed to allow for high levels of interaction between faculty and students. In order to maintain a high faculty/student ratio, space for this workshop is limited.

Pre-registration is required for this workshop. Deadline to register is July 23, 2021. However, we will be doing rolling admissions, so earlier applications are highly encouraged as the number of participants is limited to 40. Please submit the following documents to the organizers: Brent Lyons (blyons@schulich.yorku.ca) and Alison Sheridan (asherida@une.edu.au)

    • A current student CV (up to two pages) including contact information, education, research/teaching interests, publications, and conference presentations for distribution to all participants.
    • A one-page maximum memo stating your research focus and interest for participating in the GDO Doctoral Student Workshop

We expect to notify all applicants of final selection decisions by July 30, 2021.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!

    Kind regards,

    Brent Lyons and Alison Sheridan
